Who's taking over
Koray Kavukcuoglu becomes senior vice president running DeepMind's day-to-day operations, reporting directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Hassabis remains involved at the chairman/chief-scientist level but steps back from running the unit himself.
Jeff Dean's exit
Dean — one of the most influential engineers in Google's history — is leaving to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at automating machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate scientific discovery. He's not going alone: Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, DeepMind VP Oriol Vinyals, and Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le are all departing to join him.
