Travis Kalanick's Atoms Raises $1.7B for Industrial AI — With Uber In

Travis Kalanick's industrial AI startup Atoms has raised $1.7 billion, one of the largest rounds of the year for a robotics-focused company — and the investor list includes a name few expected: Uber, the company that forced Kalanick out as CEO in 2017.
Who's backing it
Andreessen Horowitz led the round, with Bain Capital, Fifth Wall, and other investors participating. As part of the deal, a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz joins Atoms' board.
a16z has been building out a thesis it calls "physical AI" — applying frontier AI models to real-world robotics and industrial automation rather than software alone — and this round deepens that bet.
What Atoms actually builds
Atoms describes its focus as "Industrial AI": systems combining AI software, sensors, and purpose-built robotics to automate physical operations. The company is targeting sectors like food production, mining, and transportation — industries with heavy physical labor and, historically, little AI penetration.
"Physical AI" is shorthand for AI systems that act in the physical world — controlling robots, machinery, or sensors — as opposed to AI that only reads and writes text, images, or code.
The Uber angle
Uber's participation is the story inside the story. Kalanick co-founded Uber and ran it until the board pushed him out amid a string of scandals in 2017. Uber investing in Kalanick's new venture — eight years later — reads as a notable reconciliation between the company and the founder who built it.
Why it matters
For founders: a $1.7B round for a pre-mainstream category (industrial/physical AI) signals investors are willing to write very large checks outside the LLM race, betting on where AI meets the physical economy.
